Wild Bird populations 1994-2008
There seems to be one glaring omission, the count of predator birds Owls, Hawks, Buzzards and Kites as well as Magpies and Crows. Their predations on young chicks especially farmland nesting species is clear to any observer and without information on their numbers any assumptions on reason for change are incomplete. Defra publish their guidelines to management of National Parks
Parks basically coincide with our uplands and are the dominant landscape area of our region. This direction from the Defra policy makers frames the activities in the Uplands and should bring all the partners together including Natural England and Environment Agency, both Defra Quangos . There is a great new chunk on sustainable communities and reference to economic growth as well of course land management. It must be the framework within the other reports including the CRC Uplands study fits as this is the action enabler strategy. Deprivation in Rural Areas Quantitative Analysis and Socio-economic Classification
Commissioned by CRC from Oxford Consultants for Social Inclusion (OCSI).
For those who want to find and tackle smaller pockets of deprivation - this analysis helps them do that (by identifying most deprived OAs as well as SOAs).
It shows the gap between numbers picked up by measuring deprived areas and numbers picked up by measuring deprived people. Only 2.4% of deprived English areas are in rural England yet 17% of all English poor households are rural households.
Living Working Countryside
The Taylor Review of Rural Economy and Affordable Housing
Research - Hill Farming systems in south west England: economic viability and delivery of public goods.
Dartmoor and Exmoor National Park Authorities and the Duchy of Cormwall commissioned Exeter university to assess the impact of changes in public financial support to upland farmers in south west England.
The report paints a bleak picture of the future for the south west's hill famers. The report will be used to support the call to reward farmers for their environmental management of the uplands.

CRC launches it's State of Countryside Report for 2008.
Strategy Unit food report published
A ten-month Strategy Unit project looking at food policy across Government was published by the Cabinet Office today. Entitled Food matters and Commissioned by the Prime Minister the report focuses on food issues in the UK and puts them in a global context. It draws together evidence about long-term trends in food production and consumption, and how food safety and nutrition impact on the health of the UK. Biofuels review published
Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly and Environment Secretary Hilary Benn today set out a new approach to biofuels based on recommendations from the Gallagher review; including that the introduction of biofuels in the UK should be slowed down to take into account emerging scientific evidence about their sustainability.
